This Doesn’t Happen in the Movies -“Or Anywhere Else”

In the Movies

This work is unusual for three reasons. It is about someone taking their first case as a PI—that never happens in books. Second, Reed Ferguson takes his ideas from great film noir. I love the genre but like his neighbors, Ace and Duce, most of my family and friends just think it old-fashioned. And third, the book is written by a woman. Not about a woman detective or chick flicks, but about a guy who convincingly likes Humphrey Bogart.

The other unusual aspect is that the client has paid someone to murder her husband. He is still alive and the people she paid are a feminist group, X Women, who are out to murder her. I don’t think a male author could get away with this twist, nor the badgering the adult detective gets from his mother in Florida.

For a fresh take on elements we prize, I highly recommend This Doesn’t Happen in the Movies. It doesn’t happen in movies or in other books.
