This is the 9th book of the Caribbean murder series, but the first I’ve read.

It is good. Good, because there are many levels to the story and meanings to “devotion.” Good, because the answers to all of these only come after we have worked through the story. Good, because I couldn’t put this down and when it was over, it made me want to read more. Good, because there are more (in earlier or later books of the series).

I felt a touch of the Caribbean, but not too much to be distracting. And the peril of her former detective partner’s daughter in jail for murdering her abusive step-father seems genuine. The partner and his relationship to the female detective is complicated and comes to a head at the finish. I don’t think I’ve ever read a mystery with such real life dramatics. And it works. I’ll never be satisfied with less again.
