I promise this is my last book about Dashiell Hammett’s writing, for awhile. It is a prequel to The Maltese Falcon.

Gorres addresses issues such as how Spade became partners with Archer, union busting, Spade’s affair with Archer’s wife, and…well you get the idea. The plot, in 3 parts seems a little overly complex and farfetched with too many characters and no real suspense.

It made me appreciate what Hammett had seemed to be able to do so easily. This is worth reading, but doesn’t have the finesse of the original. Some mysteries are just better not explained.
