Explosive Eighteen: A Stephanie Plum Novel

by Janet Evanovich

Bantam, 320 pages, 2011, $28

Sometimes you’re in such a hurry to finish a library book on Kindle that you jump into the next one when you do, not realizing you haven’t done a review of the first. That is until you discover your notes. In this case, let me tell you what I remember of the mystery novel several weeks after reading it.

The young narrator, Stephanie Plum, describes a man’s death as “taking the escalator to the food court in the sky.” Her family solves problems with silence and meatloaf—“if things doesn’t go away by ignoring them, food will take your mind off of these difficulties.” And her grandmother belongs to a bowling team called “LWB” for “Ladies with Balls.”

Then her fat sidekick falls in love with a purse-snatcher who resembles Shrek…but you get the idea. A lot of fun surprises, but a confusing plot that goes nowhere. That’s why I could so easily forget Explosive Eighteen, even without meatloaf.
